Changing the Density of Water

Written by Marcia Malory
This experiment will show you how adding salt to water increases the water's density.

Equipment Needed

An egg
A pitcher of water
Salt

The Experiment

Place the egg in the pitcher of water.

The egg will sink to the bottom.

Remove the egg.

Pour some salt in the water - about an egg-cupful of salt for every cup of water - and stir it.

Replace the egg.

The egg will now float.

How It Works

Before you added salt, the egg was denser than the water, so the egg sank.

When you added salt, you increased the density of the water. The water became denser than the egg, allowing the egg to float.
