Relighting a Candle

Written by Marcia Malory
When you light a candle, gas from the melting wax combines with the oxygen in the air to create a flame.

The following experiment will show how this happens.

Equipment Needed

1 candle
Matches

The Experiment

Light the candle then blow it out.

Before the smoke dissipates, apply a lighted match to the top of the stream of smoke.

A flame from the match will leap backwards down the gas in the smoke and ignite the wick again.
