Sound from a Ruler

Written by Marcia Malory
This experiment will show how vibrations will make a sound.

Equipment Needed

A wooden ruler
A drill
Twine - about two feet in length

The Experiment

Drill a hole near one end of the ruler.

Tie one end of the twine to the ruler.

In a wide open area, spin the ruler around on the twine.

You will hear a noise that seems to come from the ruler.

How It Works

As the ruler moves, the twine vibrates. The vibrations of the twine cause the sound.
